Smart Thermostats and Your Energy Bill: What Bend Homeowners Should Know


There's a house outside Sunriver that gets used about a dozen weekends a year and sits at 62 degrees for the rest of them.


The owner isn't careless. He's four hours away, the house has no one in it, and the alternative is wondering about frozen pipes every time the forecast drops below twenty. So he heats an empty building all winter and calls it insurance.


That house is the easiest smart thermostat decision in Central Oregon. Most houses here are a harder one — and the answer turns on three things generic advice tends to skip: what a thermostat actually saves, what heats your house, and what's behind the wall plate.



What a Smart Thermostat Actually Saves

ENERGY STAR's figure, drawn from field data rather than a manufacturer's lab, is about 8% of heating and cooling costs for a certified smart thermostat — roughly $50 a year for the average household in that dataset.


Manufacturers advertise much larger numbers. Those are typically measured against holding a house at one temperature all day, a baseline chosen to flatter the product.


Treat 8% as a ceiling to plan against rather than a number to count on. The arithmetic is simple enough to run yourself:


Your annual heating and cooling cost × 8% = a rough planning figure, not a forecast.

A household spending $1,400 a year on heating and cooling lands somewhere near $112. Your own utility bills will give you a better starting number than any average will.


Two things move you off that figure in opposite directions. If you already run disciplined setbacks and turn things down when you leave, there's less left to capture. If you currently heat an empty house all day — or keep a second home comfortable eleven months a year for the six weeks you're in it — there's considerably more.


ENERGY STAR also notes savings run higher in extreme-temperature climates and in homes that aren't occupied around the clock. Central Oregon is both. That's a reason for optimism, not license to quote you a bigger percentage.


Worth being clear about the mechanism: a smart thermostat doesn't make your furnace or heat pump more efficient. It reduces the hours you spend conditioning a house nobody is standing in.


The Part That Goes Wrong Here Isn't the Thermostat

We don't touch your furnace. Sizing, refrigerant, ductwork, equipment selection, whether your heat pump is short cycling — that's your HVAC contractor's license and their lane. If the house isn't heating properly, they're the call, not us.


What goes wrong on a smart thermostat install in Central Oregon is almost always one of two things, and both are low-voltage work.


The C-wire. Most smart thermostats need a common wire for continuous power. Plenty of Bend homes built before anyone said "smart home" don't have one at the thermostat location. Pulling a new conductor through existing framing is the trade we're actually in.


Some thermostats run on batteries instead, and some installs use an adapter at the furnace control board — that one's a coordination point with your HVAC contractor, not a shortcut around them.


The Wi-Fi. A thermostat usually gets mounted in a hallway or near a mechanical room, which is frequently the worst-covered spot in the house. A thermostat that keeps dropping offline is rarely a broken thermostat. It's a network that doesn't reach where you put it, and on larger properties with detached structures and long runs, that's a design question rather than a reboot.


That's the honest division of labor: your HVAC contractor owns the equipment. We own the wire, the network, and what the thermostat talks to on the network side.


Heat Pumps Change the Answer

This is where Central Oregon diverges from the generic advice, and there are two parts to it.

The first is a straight recommendation against our own interest. ENERGY STAR's guidance says homes with variable-capacity heat pumps — as opposed to single-speed — "will generally perform best with a manufacturer-recommended thermostat regardless of whether it is ENERGY STAR certified."


In plain terms: if you have a modern variable-capacity system, the control your equipment manufacturer built may outperform the smart thermostat you were about to buy. We'd rather say that up front than install the wrong control and let you wonder why the bill didn't move.


The second is that setback strategy on a heat pump is its own subject, and it belongs to whoever maintains your equipment. How far you can set back before auxiliary heat kicks in — the expensive electric backup that runs when the heat pump can't keep up — depends on the machine, not the thermostat.


The Rebate Picture Changed in January

If you read an article about Oregon thermostat rebates written before this year, it's wrong now.


Effective January 1, 2026, Energy Trust of Oregon discontinued its smart thermostat incentive for homes with electric heating. That was worth $100 to $250 last year. Heat Pump Advanced Controls, another $250 offer for Oregon electric homes, was discontinued the same day.


What survived is the incentive for homes primarily heated by a gas forced-air furnace — still $100 to $250. The amount depends on who installs it: $250 with a licensed contractor, $100 without. If you're comparing installers, ask each one which tier their work qualifies for. It's a $150 question.


Energy Trust also runs an online marketplace where the discount comes off at checkout rather than arriving as a rebate later. Same eligibility: gas furnace homes.


Now the part almost nobody in Central Oregon mentions. Energy Trust serves customers of five investor-owned utilities — Pacific Power, PGE, NW Natural, Cascade Natural Gas and Avista. Electric cooperatives aren't included. And a lot of this region is co-op territory: Bend is split between Pacific Power and Central Electric Cooperative, Sunriver is Midstate Electric, and much of Redmond, Sisters and Black Butte Ranch is Central Electric.


So before you plan around any of this, look at your electric bill and see whose name is on it. If it's a co-op, Energy Trust programs aren't your path — your co-op runs its own, and that's the number to call.


Two more things worth knowing. Energy Trust's thermostat incentive doesn't apply to zonal electric heat — baseboards and cadet heaters — or to ductless heat pumps, which rules out a fair number of homes here on its own. And if the thermostat rebate is gone for you, Pacific Power's heat pump incentives through Energy Trust are not: as of the January 2026 schedule, $800 for a ductless heat pump and $1,000 for a ducted one in an owner-occupied home, and higher for rentals and attached residences. Income-qualified offers exist as well.


If you were weighing a control against equipment, the money moved to the equipment.


Two programs you'll see cited that won't help you today. Oregon's HOMES and HEAR rebates get referenced constantly; the Oregon Department of Energy currently says "No rebates are currently available. We will set a launch date when we have approval from U.S.


Department of Energy." Worth watching, not worth waiting for. And the federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit applied to qualifying improvements through December 31, 2025 — it also never covered smart thermostats as their own category.


The Bigger Return Is the House You Left

Back to the house outside Sunriver.


The percentage argument is about efficiency. The stronger argument is about the building nobody is walking into. Remote temperature control and a low-temperature alert are worth more than the energy they save, because a pipe that fails in a vacant house in January costs more than a decade of thermostat savings. The same logic runs through a vacation rental, where guest setpoint limits and an automatic reset between stays stop the house being heated to 78 by someone who isn't paying the bill.

And on a connected system, climate stops being its own app. Leaving arms the security system, locks up and drops the thermostat in one action. Afternoon sun gets handled by lowering automated shades before the room heats, instead of asking the air conditioning to win a fight it started late.


Five Questions Before You Buy

  1. What heats your house? Gas forced air, heat pump, ductless, or zonal electric. This determines your rebate and half your thermostat options.


  2. Whose name is on your electric bill? Pacific Power and Central Electric are different answers.


  3. Is there a C-wire at the thermostat? If you don't know, that's fine — find out before you order hardware.


  4. Is there real Wi-Fi where the thermostat lives? Stand there with your phone. If it's marginal now, it'll be worse behind a wall plate.


  5. Does your equipment manufacturer recommend a specific control? Especially with a variable-capacity system.


Look for the ENERGY STAR label while you're at it. That's the certification the 8% figure is built on.


What It Comes Down To

A smart thermostat is a good buy for a lot of Bend homes. Which one, and whether it's the right place to spend, depends on what heats yours.


The savings are real and modest. The rebate turns entirely on your fuel and your utility, and for much of Central Oregon it went away this year. The install succeeds or fails on a wire and a wireless signal. And the biggest return usually isn't on the power bill at all — it's on the house you left.
